I am enchanted by this interpretation on Sardonyx shell of the mythological character Medusa, an almost lifelike representation masterfully engraved by a skilled engraver from Torre del Greco in the mid-1900s.
Where he manages to recreate movement and expression in this sublime work.
Cameo of significant dimensions 70 mm in round shape and first quality shell as can be seen from the intense brown colour which creates more emphasis on the engraving.
Medusa was seduced by Neptune (Poseidon) in a temple of Minerva (Athena), and in revenge, Minerva transformed Medusa's beautiful hair into serpents. Because she was mortal and had the ability to turn men into stone, Perseus was sent to cut off her head.
From the cutting off of Medusa's head, Pegasus was born, the winged horse that brought Perseus home. The message that the myth conveys to us is that, in order not to succumb to the petrifying energy and therefore to unconscious fears, we must not follow instinct and fight directly, but rather use reason and reflect.
